A little goes a long... long way

After the devastating flash floods that brought the whole Manila under water, it is the time that we will see all the goodness in the world.  That it does exist during these traumatic times.  You will see from the news on the television that everybody is trying to lend a helping hand in some way or another.  The “Bayanihan” spirit is very much vivid everywhere.  Charities and foundations are now accepting and distributing relief goods to those that lost most or if not all their belongings.  Company giants that are in competition in business have joined forces to pledge and give to those unfortunate ones.  Volunteers as young as seven year olds are doing what they can to help.

It is hard to see what tomorrow will bring for our fellowmen countrymen.  After the damage, there is the subject of health problems, looking after the injured, hospitalizations and the funeral situations of the dead. If you want to help in anyway, you can contact any foundation or charitable institutions you know in the Philippines.  I posted here in my website the three big institutions, where everyone can pledge his/her support fort he victims of this natural calamity.

Maraming salmat sa mga tulong ninyo sa ating mga kababayan!

“Life Happens Anyway”

by Lorna Titgemeyer

Last week, I received  a letter from a long time email friend, pouring out her feelings of sudden emptiness, loneliness and panic about what to do at this phase of her life. She just became a senior citizen and the word  “ GERIATRY” has been  implanted in her mind since then, thus  causing so much turmoil in her.thoughts and feelings..

This email friend of mine had always been a career woman. She always got what she wanted: be it a new  boyfriend; a step on the career ladder; an avant garde appartment etc. We met 25 years ago, on one of my visits to the Philippines. Since then, we have been writing each other frequently.

Now all of a sudden, she feels lonely and empty. Her daughter,  who she got during one of her  panic attacks of  being childless although having reached the age of maternity, is on her own and  is also weaving on her career as architect…so shortly said, no full time for her..  more

CONFRONTATIONS

Our mothers taught us to be "nice at all times." But there are certain situations that call for "getting ugly." Difficult confrontations reward us with self-respect.

Your mother was raised to be nice, my mother was raised to be nice. You and I were raised to be nice, too, no matter what sort of deceit, back-stabbing, or just plain abuse we encounter in the "real world."

What our nice mothers and grandmothers DIDN'T teach us, was how to place clear limits on what other people could say or do to us.....or around us.

Eventually, my mother, a model of good manners and consideration, realized that some people and situations required her to shelve her "be-nice training." I guess I'll have to get ugly with so - and - so, she'd say, vastly overstating what she planned to. We, too, have to get ugly.

I confronted someone immediately - something I wouldn't have able to do even years ago and let know that discussing and betraying me behind my back was UNACCEPTABLE. She/He honestly can't understand that GOSSIP and BETRAY is NEVER HARMLESS. The saddest thing is that she/he never get the point.

This gossip-peddler probably was raised to be "nice" too. People who avoid confrontations at any cost often turn into back-biters. They strike unspoken bargains as well, though the rest of us usually don't realize it at a time.

We break this unspoken bargains, when we confront people honestly and directly, and bad feelings are often the first result. It's never easy, not being part of the crowd, which is why so many people go along when the dirt's being dished.

But when we stand up for ourselves, set rock-solid limits on what we will and won't tolerate, our rewards are self-respect and self-confidence, not a bad trade-off for getting "ugly" and setting clear boundaries.

Philippine bowling League in Vienna - established

In Vienna, Austria, bowling favours the sportsman’s year-round calendar as there is no need to worry about extreme outdoor temperatures. Tracing back to almost two decades ago, a few Filipino bowlers in Vienna took on this sport by joining leagues and tournaments organized by local bowling centers (perhaps to alleviate the rigours of expatriate life). As years went on, the number of enthusiasts grew, prompting them to organize themselves into a group to meet the eventual demands of growth as evidenced by a bigger membership and better bowling skills. This is the very reason why Philippine Bolwing League in Austria was founded. Though the initative of Bowling Aficionados in Austria - Larry Subido, Cathy Calupas, Noel Alarcon and Carlos Gonzales – PBLA came in existence.

The founders are looking forward in the envision of triumph of competitive spirit, sportsmanship and camaraderie among Pinoys in Austria. more in the December issue of BikolExpress

Bowling tourney held to aid RP’s poor families

A Filipino women’s group based in Austria held a charity bowling tournament to benefit its scholarship projects in the southern Philippines.

“I am really a bowling fan. I have been participating in all Pinoy Bowling tournaments here and when I learned that there is a charity bowling for the benefit of our less privileged kababayans in the Philippines, I immediately decided to join. I want to help in my own little way,” said Filipino bowler Chito Constante.

Participants to the Babaylan Austria's Strike 9 Charity bowling tournament were glad that such initiative was staged to help poor but outstanding Filipino children in the Philippines.

“I participated here since I want to make a difference in the lives of the children right in our country, the Philippines. I know the situation of a lot of Filipinos there. Most parents can't do anything because they can't afford it,” Randy Ilagan told ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau.

“We are pleased to be able to sponsor such a great event,” said Willy Budoy, advertising agent of a Philippine Door-to-Door Business Firm in Vienna.  “The Babaylan Austria is a worthwhile organization and we are proud to help support them in their educational projects in the Philippines,” Budoy added.

Lani Zigler, president of Babaylan Austria expressed her gratitude for the warm reception given to the group by Filipinos.

“Bowl for the benefit of our less-fortunate brothers and sisters in the Philippines, most especially in the Cebu area has raised  not only a certain amount to finance our scholarship programs but also helped increase the awareness of people here in Austria about the situation of the majority of our countrymen in the Philippines who could not afford to send their children to school,”  Zigler said.

Babaylan Austria is also planning to stage a bigger charity affair in order to gather more funds for its projects in the Philippines.

Formed in 1996, its objective is to promote Filipino women’s empowerment and ensure the members full participation in the development processes through sharing of experiences, information and resources.

A Filipina from the Bikol Region who has been living and working in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland joined the “Ausländerbeirat”  (Foreigner advisory board) of the said town.

Teresita Papa, a nurse by profession  arrived in Switzerland in the early 80’s.  She joined the “Ausländerbeirat” on January 2008.  Papa told BikolExpress.net, “Since I came to Switzerland in 1983, I find it very interesting to know the culture of the people here. This is the very reason why I was convinced to join the “Ausländerbeirat”. Through this, I came to know a lot of people from different cultures, too. It is also my little way of thanking the country for the warm acceptance to us Filipinos.”

In Kreuzlingen, Switzerland almost 46 percent of the population do not possess a Swiss passport. The foreigner advisory board has primarily an advisory function. Thus the foreign population receives the opportunity to request and suggest with the town councillor, through the intercession of the “Ausländerbeirat”.  At the same time the city has the possibility of consulting the foreign population on matters that pertains to migration and integration.
