Pinoy
Migrants
The
migration of “kababayans” to more developed states has reached an
unprecedented level in the past few years. While the primary aim of
most Pinoy migrants is to attain a life better than what they had in
the Philippines, it is not always the case.
Despite getting the highest academic degrees, professionals seeking
greener pastures often end up frustrated because their diplomas and
licenses are not credited and recognized. If Philippine laws
prohibit non-Filipinos from practicing a profession in the country,
other nations like Austria and in other neighboring European
countries, through professional organizations, are as strict in
licensing migrants.
Except perhaps for nurses who are in demand by the graying
population of most developed countries, migrant professionals who
want to work in their fields of specialization have to re-enroll to
obtain a degree in the standard of the host country. With this
obstacle, many take on jobs that are less challenging, satisfied
with the thought that the remuneration is higher than what is earned
back home.
By going abroad, one may be able to flee from the disappointments
and the lack of opportunities in our country. But life is not a
paradise in a foreign land. There is subtle and sometimes open
discrimination. There is another language and culture to adjust to.
The moral values are liberal, if not loose. Thus, while there are
those who do succeed in their new homeland, there are many more who
fail and suffer.
Lots of courage is therefore needed by anyone who decides to migrate
to another country. But most importantly, strong faith in God to
pursue a new life of uncertainty is required.

INSTITUTIONS
In this ASPIRIN AGE, empowered by high technology, the
inspiring message could have been proclaimed faster to a
broader mass of people. But instead of becoming a tool to
reach out for more, it has become a messanger of wide-scale
disdain and scorn.
Leaders of all INSTITUTIONS - be in civic, ethnic, business,
politics, non-government agencies and churches - tearfully
confessed their indiscretions for the whole world to see. As
expected, no one would hear a word of what these leaders and
their minions still have to say.
People have become suspicious and cynical. Furthermore, not
only leaders but INSTITUTIONS itself turned out to be
competitive and one proving to be better than the other,
instead of having ONENESS - to have a positive image to the
community.
We are all part of only ONE COMMUNITY - be in civic, ethnic,
religious group and whatsoever. Lectures and teachings is of
NO VALUE, if it is done only in words and not in proper good
deeds.
For an INSTITUTION to be effective in the 21th century - it
has to answer the question - HOW CAN I BRING ITS MESSAGE TO
PEOPLE TODAY?

Sinulog 2009 in
Vienna
 |
All roads led to Mount Carmel Church at the
Stefan Fadinger Platz, the Filipino Church in Vienna’s 10th
District on January 18, 2009. What made this third Sunday
of January special was that, it was the feast day of the
patron saint of Cebu – the Sto. Nino. In Cebu City, the
feast is popularly is popularly known as Sinulog, which is a
ritual dance in honor of the Sto. Nino. A pageant of faith,
Sinulog has now become another tourism attraction in the
Philippines, the likes of Ati-atihan, Dinagyxang and several
other carnivals.
During the previous years, the devotees of
the Child Jesus here in Vienna would make a small
celebration in the privacy of their homes. This year, a big
celebration was held for 6th time inside the
Filipino church at the Stefan Fadinger Platz. The
celebration began around midafternoon with a concelebrated
novena mass officiated by Fr. Ely Dalanon with four other
priests from Tanzania, Austria and Philippines.

Pinoy kids in Austria join Three
Kings Carol Singing campaign
 |
Around 90,000 children in
Austria dressed up as the Three Wise Men moved from
house-to-house to announce the gospel message of Christ’s
birth on Three Kings Day. The practice is done in
remembrance of the biblical Three Wise Men who worshipped
the infant Jesus by bringing him gold, frankincense and
myrrh. Filipino
children joined the campaign since part of its proceeds will
be allotted for social and pastoral projects of the
“Dreikönigsaktion Österreich” (Three Kings Campaign) in the
Philippines.

Proud to be a Filipino?
 |
We cannot be proud of something that
we don’t have, are not, or will never have, much less
something that does not mean anything (like being proud for pride’s
sake, for instance). To therefore understand why all these
calls to be “proud to be Pinoy” seem to ring hollow nowadays, we
have to revisit the essence of this pride we “should” be
feeling for the Philippines — the achievement, assets, and
added-value to humanity that should be underpinning said pride.

Talangka mentality
- a bad Pinoy culture

|
Crabs or talangka in the pinoy language, is
not doing the Pinoys any good at all.Crabs
being put into a container will try to climb up to the lid to be
able to escape. However, other crabs will try to grab them down, as
a result, nothing will be able to escape the container.more

COMMENT - what our
readers say |
The article about the “Talangka
Mentality” is indeed volltreffer.
It might sound so negative about this Filipino mentality but
this is a reality that Filipinos have to accept. I also
observed here among our kababayans in Austria that if they
are married to an Austrian they thought they are much better
than the other. Not to mention one person I know, she’s
really hypocrite – making comment „ganito ang ugali ko so
tanggapin nila ako„ where is the room for personal growth?
Stagnant !
As long as we live, we are in the learning process – we
learned through our mistakes and from others experiences.
We pick what is good and throw the bad (habits). Is it hard?
Or sign of arrogance!
Recall 30
years back – where were you before? Are you rich? Kumakain
ka rin ng daing at tuyo or baka naghahati hati pa kayo ng
kapatid mo sa itlog? My accusation might be below the belt
but I want to challenge some of our kababayans here. There
is still time to change, if you want - „better late than
never.” Baka mamatay ng maaga walang makipagdasal at
sabihin pa mabuti at namatay dahil masama naman ugali nya –
masakit marinig yon but baka mangyari sa atin. Humble lang
at mas marami matutuwa sa atin . Payo kapatid ba! for more

Pinoy prepared and cooked food for
the homeless in Vienna

|
Just as he did last year, Wilson
Tanho, a Filipino United Nations employee in Vienna
celebrated Christmas with the poor and homeless in Vienna.
Instead of putting a part of his earnings during the past
year into some other things, he saved this in order to
realize his practice of feeding the homeless during
Christmas time. Three days before Christmas Wilson,
together with two faithful "workmates", Minnie Langer and
Mila Leutner and three new helpers, Delia Vanas (Bulakena/Vanas
Café), Cirilo Boloron and Guenter
Klingenbrunner (Horizont3000) joined in the food
preparations and distribution of food.
